BIOCUF - Biomimetic CO2 Fixation and Utilization for Formate Production
Abstract: BIOCUF develops and demonstrates an innovative Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) process that integrates biological components (enzymes) with a high-performance chemical system to capture CO₂ and convert it into formate, a valuable compound for energy storage and industrial applications. The approach aims to enable simultaneous CO₂ capture and conversion, reducing energy demand and process size compared with conventional technologies. This technology is being validated through experimental activities and pilot-scale demonstration to assess efficiency, product separation, and operational performance, while producing formate as a useful chemical intermediate that can be further upgraded.
This research was funded by CETPartnership, the Clean Energy Transition Partnership, under the 2023 joint call for research proposals, co-funded by the European Commission (GA 101069750) and national funding organizations (for Italy, MIMIT).
