Saffron and Tepals Nanodrugs as new therapeutic approach in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: a pilot study
Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, is a chronic relapsing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract caused by an altered balance between the immune system and gut microbiome. Its treatment is still challenging, as current synthetic drugs often lead to adverse effects. Natural compounds are emerging as promising therapeutic options. Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) has long been used for its anti inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective activities, and has shown efficacy in ulcerative colitis. Recent data suggest that the synergistic action of its components is crucial for its protective effects. This project aims to develop and test saffron extracts, including tepals, as co adjuvant treatments for IBD. Their chemical composition and biological activity will be fully characterized, and extracts, alone or in liposomal form, will be tested on intestinal cell models. The most effective formulation will then be evaluated in patients.
