POlarization-SEnsitive Imaging Detectors with Organic Nanostructured coatings - POSEIDON

Abstract: The development of compact on-chip polarization sensitive detectors is crucial for many advanced detection systems since polarimetry provides complex information that other techniques cannot give. This project aims to add polarimetric capability to imaging cameras by the development of an organic coating based on anisotropic nanostructured emissive materials. Double layer films of organic polymers aligned one orthogonal to the other and coupled to color-sensitive image detectors convert the polarization components of the incoming light into different colors, discriminated by the detection system. The two research institutes involved in the project are highly experienced in oriented organic materials and imaging detectors. The evaluation of the performances reasonably achievable with different materials may provide potential breakthrough innovation for a number of scientific and industrial applications also motivated by the low-cost of this approach.
